The State of Digital Writing Today
Over the river and through the woods…
The journey into digital writing with students has its ups and downs, twists and turns. There are many variables when it comes to putting together a good experience for students. I have to be enthusiastic and positive, even if I’m not feeling it right then. The classroom teacher has to be supportive, interested, and believe this is important. Not every fourth and fifth grade teacher is participating. Teachers who are not scheduling word processing lessons with me, or who are not using their class blogs, are using Edmodo or something else to give their class’ experience composing at the keyboard. We are making progress one way or another.
Doing the word processing lessons with upper grades is helping me see what I need to reinforce when writing with the lower grades. This week as first graders are answering questions posed about their Favorite Thanksgiving Foods graph I’m emphasizing putting a space after the question mark at the end of the question and their answer, something I may have glossed over previously. This will help us make long-term progress.
