Community Resource: RAPS Summer Program
February 19, 2013, 3:20 pm

Attention ILES Families. I was recently made aware of a REALLY AWESOME opportunity for children in our community. The Really Awesome People Swimming program (RAPS) began in 2007 because of the need for ALL children to be able to learn to swim regardless of their economic status. The program teaches disadvantaged children, mainly minorities, how to swim and how to be safe in, on, and around the water.

Really Awesome People Swimming has openings for children between the ages of 5 – 14 to learn how to swim this summer. The program takes children on a first come, first served basis. The lessons are held at the Timberlake Community Association Pool on Windsor Oaks Blvd. and transportation is not provided. If you or anyone you know may benefit from this program, please contact Ms. Aladj at 648-2692 for more information on how to register.

A message for children with a parent who is deployed..
January 9, 2013, 3:25 pm

From: Trevor Romain, The Comfort Crew [mailto:trev=comfortcrew.org@mail58.us1.mcsv.net] On Behalf Of Trevor Romain, The Comfort Crew

 Dear Fellow Military Kid,

My name is Daniel, and my father is a member of the United States Navy. I am 17 years old and my dad has been in the Navy for 23 years, and he has been deployed so many times that I lost count.

As I’m sure you already know, it can be very hard to deal with a parent on deployment. A lot of times you get sad when other times you’re angry, but what you need to remember is that wherever your mom or dad is going and no matter how long they’re gone, that they are out there saving lives, and that when they come back, they will still love you.

If you are having trouble dealing with your parents being away, you can look to your siblings for comfort because even if they don’t always show it, they love you and their #1 priority in life is to take care of you. If you don’t have brothers or sisters, there is always someone else going through a similar situation. You can always talk to your parent, brother, sister, or friends.

Other ways to stay positive are to get out and have fun. Hang out with your friends and family, join a club and help your community, or join a sport because they are always fun. I love football, and when my dad is gone, I play knowing how proud he is of me. Probably the most important thing to do is to remember to smile everyday because your parents love to see you smile and be happy.

 -Daniel
