Attention all 2nd through 5th graders! Did you know that you can access all those research databases we’ve been using AND you can see what books you have checked out and when they are due?
Welcome back to another year of books and reading! We’re off to a great start in the library: we’ve circulated 6,843 books during the month of September! (Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering in the library! We really need help shelving books!) All students except kindergarteners are allowed 2 books at a time. Kindergarteners just get 1 book at a time. Books are checked out for one week and the date is stamped on the back. Students may return books before that time and check out new ones.
I would like to share a few guidelines that we teach the students in the care of library books:
- Use clean, gentle hands
- No food or drinks
- Only use a bookmark to mark your place
- Keep books away from pets and younger siblings
- Do not use scissors, crayons or glue near the books
- Keep books dry
- Do not take books out at daycare/afterschool
We do not charge overdue fines, however lost books must be paid for. If you find a book that you paid for, you may return it for a refund. Email overdues are sent to parents on Tuesday afternoons. Paper overdues are sent home in the Dolphin Folder on the last Tuesday of the month.
Students have access to a number of online research resources and ebooks through Destiny. Students can access this from the link on the Landstown Elementary Web Page.
The direct phone line to the library is 648-2900. You can also reach us via email! If you have a concern about a late book, please email Alexis.Garland@vbschools.com; she is the library assistant. For other library related issues, please feel free to email me at Terri.Troia@vbschools.com.
Keep reading over the summer break! Studies show that students who do not read during the summer come back to school with a loss in reading achievement! Information on our Summer Reading Program can be found in the pane on the right!
Make sure you visit the Landstown Elementary Home Page for a link to Tumblebooks! Students can listen to books and/or read them right on your computer!
You can download ebooks and audiobooks FOR FREE from the Virginia Beach Public Library’s website. You just need a library card which is also free!
We also have a link to Destiny, our library catalog which also allows access to our online resources. STudents must know their lunch number and network password to access these sites.
I am listening to The Help on my IPOD when I am in the car and walking. I find this one fascinating!!
In book form, I am reading the newest Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson series) The Son of Neptune and loving it!
Many of the primary students talk about apples and Johnny Appleseed in the fall. Here is the apple tree created by Mrs. Weers’ , Ms. Bristow’s, Mrs. Marshall’s, Mrs. Wommack’s and Mrs. Apple’s classes:
A couple of weeks ago the preschoolers did a lesson on “All ABout Me.” The identified whether they were a boy or a girl…here are their pictures:
just left the library after having checked out books for the first time!
I can honestly say it has never gone smoother!!! Ms. Garland and I were very impressed with the little ones today!
This group needs to make sure that their books come back to school by MONDAY, OCT. 3.
