Authentic Correspondence

Ms. Hathcock will be taking us to Antarctica!

I am very excited to announce that students in the gifted cluster classes at Landstown Elementary will have an opportunity to correspond with an ODU doctoral student, Stephanie Hathcock, while she is on a 6 week cruise to Antarctica.  Ms. Hathcock will be joining a crew of scientists who will be trying to find the source of iron concentrations in the Ross Sea.  Her job will be to incorporate what the scientists are doing into palatable material for school-aged kids.  She’ll be creating a website and writing a blog to help peak students’ interest and give them a first-hand look at the scientific process in action.

Though her opportunities for communication during her six week journey will be limited, Stephanie has agreed to stay in touch with our students about her adventure and what she is learning.  She’ll be heading for Antarctica by way of Chile right before Christmas, so we’ll be making contact with her via her blog right after we return from winter break

Word Masters Results for Meet #1

The results are in for the first Word Masters meet!  Each class, grades 3-5 had some impressive results.  We even had a student receive a 19 out of 20!  Remember when your child shares his/her results that the meet is intended to be challenging.  The creators of the contest say that even a score of 10:20 is to be commended.   And now, the results!

Math League Contest

Though not just for the gifted or students in the cluster class, several of our students are participating in math contests through the year.  I am working with the school’s math committee to offer some of our top performing math students the opportunity to challenge themselves through the Virginia Math League.  In November, some students from all classes in grades 3, 4 and 5 completed a math contest in which they had 30 minutes to complete 30 problems.  Though the contest is in a multiple choice format, it requires multiple step problem solving.  The contest creators say that if a child gets only 12 answers correct they should be commended as the problems are meant to be challenging and few students get even 24 correct.  It is also important to note that there is no contest for 3rd graders, so they are invited to try the 4th grade contest.  Two more small contests will be held in January and March, and in June the big contest will be held and top performers will be awarded prizes.
