On Saturday, March 10, students from Ms. Taylor’s fourth grade class and Ms. Swager’s fifth grade class joined students from four Norfolk schools to compete in the American Contract Bridge League’s Youth Tournament. This tournament was the culminating event following more than four months of bridge lessons with life master Mrs. Miller. Students used all of the skills they’d acquired to count high card points, bid hands, and play bridge for approximately two and one-half hours. Following the contract bridge format, each individual and his/her partner rotated through the room to play against several other pairs of players. Scores were calculated for each game and later totalled to determine the winners of trophies for first through third place.
Not only was Landstown Elementary the lone school representing Virginia Beach in the tournament, the fith grade team took first place! Mrs. Miller said that the fouth graders also played very well. Thanks to all of the parents who brought their children to the event, to Mrs. Miller who volunteers countless hours to teaching the children and coordinating the event, to the American Contract Bridge League who provides free textbooks, t-shirts and trophies and to the students who strech their brains to learn a complex and challenging game. Congragulations to our 5th grade champions and their very proud teacher, Ms. Swager!
