Summer Options

Universities and  agencies across the country offer a wide variety of summer opportunities for high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and/or math. Some are cost free; others carry tuition. Many offer scholarships. These programs are often competitive with early deadlines. We will post programs for Summer 2013 as we receive them.

The Pre-College for Engineering Systems Outreach Program

Summer 2013 

This is the Pre-College for Engineering Systems (PCES) Summer Outreach Program sponsored by Howard University and the National Science Foundation and offered by the Center for Energy Systems and Control (CESaC) at Howard University. This program focuses on specialized career options in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and is intended to increase the number of underrepresented students acquiring advanced degrees in STEM fields. Students will be introduced to engineering lecture series with special emphasis on electrical systems, applications of systems theory, power and energy, wireless communications and nanotechnology, other engineering professions, invited guest speakers, SAT preparation, mathematics, English, design projects and team work.

Note: Once accepted, a deposit of $150.00 will be required for the registration fee.

Program Details:

  • Students having a strong Mathematics, Science, and English background are selected to live on the campus of Howard University,  attend workshops, conduct research, take field trips, and participate in cultural and recreational activities.   • What: Youth Policy Summit 2013: A Wetter, Better World
    Who: Ages 14-18
    When: June 10-15, 2013
    Cost: $900Youth Policy Summit (YPS) provides students with a unique training and preparatory experience that engages a contemporary, science-intensive policy issue. This experience brings high school students together from around the country and provides them with the research, negotiation, problem solving, and policy analysis skills they will need to be successful in their future endeavors as engaged active citizens and professionals. This year’s summit will focus on freshwater sustainability and natural resource management in the Western United States and will address the question, How can we create a ‘wetter, better world?’Throughout the course of this program, students will:

    • Interact with other students from around the country
    • Experience the great Colorado outdoors
    • Spend a morning with a panel of experts in the field
    • Participate in mediation and facilitation trainings
    • Develop action plans in small work groups
    • Draw their own conclusions about what they feel are the best solutions on a local, state and national level

    Students will not only gain a transferable set of problem solving and critical thinking skills, but they will have the tools to take a more active role in the decision-making process in their communities and have their voices heard!

  • The STEM Education Center at the University of South Florida would like to announce their 2013 Summer Research for Scholars Program for gifted high school students. A brief description of the program is attached here. USF STEM Flyer  Through individual research projects and inventions, their aim is to inspire, challenge, and expand student horizons in STEM fields and show the interconnectedness and applications of these fields.The USF Department of Mathematics has offered a summer program for gifted high school students continuously for the past thirty-four summers.   • Rising Juniors & Seniors are invited to apply to any the Management & Technology Summer Institute (M & TSI) sponsored by the Jerome Fisher Program in Management and Technology, the Wharton School, and the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania. The Jerome Fisher Program is Penn’s oldest coordinated dual-degree program, combining the fields of engineering and business.M & TSI gives students a special opportunity to explore the combination of engineering, business, and entrepreneurship on a dynamic and vibrant Ivy League campus. Our program is led by Penn professors and guest lecturers and includes site visits to companies and exercises and activities designed to coach the fundamental skills necessary for academic and career success.   • SSTP is a program of the Connie Belin & Jacqueline N. Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development. Participants in SSTP will have the opportunity to engage in challenging research, connect with interesting classmates, and learn from inspirational faculty. In this program, students conduct scientific research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students will spend approximately 40 hours per week researching a field of interest to them. Social and academic activities, such as seminars on research writing and poster presentations, will occupy the evenings. The University of Iowa’s Colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Graduate College all participate in this program. During the final week of the program, all students will present the results of their research project to the other SSTP participants, faculty, and research staff at a formal poster session. All students will also write a formal abstract summarizing their 6 weeks of research.   • Jefferson Lab High School Summer Honors Program Summer 2013
  • To be eligible to participate in the Jefferson Lab High School Summer Honors Program, you must attend a local high school (within 60 miles of Jefferson Lab), be at least 16 years old by June 15 of the application year, be in good academic standing, and maintain at least a 3.3 grade point average. Students who are selected to participate in the Jefferson Lab High School Summer Honors Program are chosen on the basis of demonstrated skills and merit. Dependents of Jefferson Lab employees are not eligible for this program.
  • The 2013 Jefferson Lab High School Summer Honors Program begins on June 24, 2013 and concludes on August 2, 2013. To apply to the Jefferson Lab High School Summer Honors Program, follow the steps listed below. You must complete a new application package for each academic year in which you wish to be considered.

    1. Complete the Student Application Form and Self-Identification Form, legibly printed or typed.

    2. Have two adults who know you well (at least one from school) complete a Reference Form and submit them with your application (leave in sealed envelope). Be sure to write your name in the space indicated on the forms before giving them to your references.

    3. Return the Application, Self-Identification Form, and two Reference Forms (each in a sealed envelope) to the Science Education Office (at the address listed below) at Jefferson Lab.

    4. Obtain copies of your high school grades to date and a list of the classes you are currently taking. If you are selected for a personal interview, these copies must be provided to Jefferson Lab at the time of your interview.

The three-week Summer Academy in Applied Science and Technology (SAAST) combines sophisticated theory with hands-on practical experience in cutting-edge technologies.     The NASA “One Stop Shopping Initiative Recruiting NASA Interns, Fellows, and Scholars” (OSSI/NIFS) website is open for applications between November 1, 2012 through March 15, 2013 at https://intern.nasa.gov. This is now the only website accepting applications for Summer 2013 positions.

Youth Conservation Corps, if you enjoyed your experiences at the Tetons Science School, or if you couldn’t go and would like to explore environmental stewardship studies coupled with community service, the State or National Youth Conservation Corps may be for you!  Both programs are competitive (only 30 openings in the Yellowstone program!) and will pay participants a stipend for their service.  State information    National information
