The Virginia Standards of Learning for Literacy are new this year. They are high quality standards and are in-line with the national movement toward Common Core Standards in Literacy.
The Goals of the State Literacy Standards were designed to explicitly define the grade level standards for all students within a grade level, and to address the Developmental Stages of Literacy.
The intent of the Grade level Standards( commonly known as grade level standards), is to provide instruction in reading strategies and skills that all readers need to make meaning with text . The level of complexity in which they are taught to demonstrate their understanding increases over time through out the year and through the grade levels. The whole grade standards are most often delivered through an explicit model of instruction which entail teacher demonstration and modeling, and multiple guided and independent practice opportunities. These strategies build in complexity as your child moves through the the stages of literacy and grade levels. Assessment measures are used to guide teachers to be responsive to student understanding through small group and individual instructional practices.
The intent of the Developmental Standards (commonly known as small group standards), are to recognize the decades of research related to how a child learns to speak, read, write, and think. The research is clear that these developmental standards are best delivered in a small group setting. Small groups provide the setting for lessons that are relevant for that group of students at that time. Small group standards allow for student grouping based on multiple data points. Traditionally, we have grouped our students primarily using one or two data points. Now, the small group standards, guide us to use the DRA (an insightful reading assessment) alongside other assessments to determine our small group. We also use these multiple points of data to inform the intervention structures we recommend for our students ( such as Read 180 and PALS), as well as develop extension learning events for students that are ready to move deeper with text. The goals we set for our students are relevant to their evolving literacy needs and our small groups will continue to be flexible and fluid to ensure we are meeting the readiness of our Providence Readers.
